Four Ways To Attract And Engage Life Scientists For Your Next Event

We’ve been organizing life science events for more than 3 years now and we see the need more than ever to help biotech researchers and professionals network. Creating an engaging event with notoriously shy people isn’t always easy, and we’ve had both missteps and real winning ideas. We’d like to see more successful events being held and see a real opportunity for organizations and companies to get involved. Here are four ways we’ve found to get scientists to attend, engage, and get more out of events, which benefits all involved. Speed Networking. If you’ve done speed dating, you’ll get this easily. Check out our post on the San Diego Biotechnology Network site for all the details, and here is the rundown. Arrange tables in a “U” shape and place chairs matched across the table on the inside and outside. Have everyone take a seat and make sure all have partners, then give them 4 minutes to talk. Prep them by telling them to bring lots of business cards and to craft a 30 second ‘elevator speech’ to describe who they are and what they’re looking for. A Networking Turkey? My LinkedIn Life Science Network Visualized

Recently a cool app for visualizing your primary LinkedIn network has been the talk of Twitter. Mine looks like the ‘hand turkeys’ kids draw around Thanksgiving, what does it mean? I’m not sure how useful it is beyond a curiosity of how your network grows. You can click on users and see who they’re connected to and get a feeling for their expertise, but you likely already know this information. See my insights below the image. My LinkedIn network visualization is labeled according to companies I’ve worked at or consulted with, and shows me things I was already aware of, and some new insights: Related companies (the middle fingers) are grouped together because, well, they’re related, and there is cross talk between them as far as personnel. All of the work I do or did here represented here is directly related to my training as an X-ray crystallographer (in a galaxy far, far, away). I’ve worked in the more general field of life science, and these companies are represented by the thumb and pinkie. Why Face to Face Matters Now More Than Ever

We recently did speed networking at a San Diego Biotechnology Network (SDBN) event , and many of the scientists were pleased with the number of connections they made, and asked when we would do it again. This made me stop and think about the importance of face to face (f2f) interactions, and why they are more important than ever these days. The fact that we can connect online now in more ways than ever is powerful, but it makes face to face interactions and events more important in many ways, and we’ve outlined a few below. The Personal Touch. At all of our SDBN events, I make a point of verbally inviting everyone I meet to connect with me on LinkedIn. Yes, this benefits me, but it also helps younger scientists feel less shy about reaching out to me online. Seeing that I’m a real person, who wants to help them, is important, and is much more successful than inviting someone I’ve never met via email. The fact that we all get so many electronic messages a day has made us understandably suspicious. In Defense of ‘1.0’ Technologies

You are likely hearing people using ‘2.0’ as a suffix these days for anything that’s supposed to be new and improved. The term stems from the advent of web 2.0, representing more functionality and interactivity than the original ‘1.0 version’ of applications on the internet. The term is used to signify anything that is done using new web tools to improve users’ experiences or facilitate interactions between them. As we’ve seen with anything new, however, there is a lot of hype initially, and eventually the idea or technology realizes its potential. We should remember that there is still many reasons to use traditional methods to contact or meet people. Here is a recent example. Around the same time I got an email and a phone call from two people who had almost identical requests from me regarding a partnership. I flagged the email, never got back to it, and meanwhile have met twice with the person who called me. I mentioned this to the person who called me and she said that she looked over my site, thought about it, and decided a phone call was the best way to achieve her goal. You’ve surely noticed it in other areas–the news is chock full of stories about how businesses are using social media to get ahead. What about using social media in the biotechnology or life sciences industry to help your business to grow? Well, there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that Biotech’s presence is lagging behind other industries in most social media. Searching “biotech” in Facebook and Twitter gives a small number of results compared to other industries, and most of the bookmarking sites don’t even have a biotechnology category (we’ll define these media below). The good news is that now is the time to get active in this media, so that you can get traction now before the competition discovers how useful it is. Besides further engaging your customers (a la Web 2.0), you can also use it to increase your web traffic by improving your search engine ranking. Biocom Open House

I attended the Biocom Open House in San Diego last Thursday, and had a great time. The theme was “Southern California Life Science Industry is Larger than Life,” complete with oversized nametags and summer “accessories” and food. I saw some familiar faces and met some new as well. I met someone from Pacira Pharmaceuticals, formerly Skye Pharma, who are actively developing and marketing their group of local anasthetic products. I met Stephen Chang, CSO of Stemgent, a relatively new company in San Diego developing products for stem cell research, an exciting new area. From a marketing standpoint, their website is impressive and “web 2.0,” meaning that it has interactive features such as a forum and a wiki. I was interested to hear about Avitacor, which runs clinical trials in Mexico, from their co-founder Ciro Garcia. I’m betting this is something we’ll hear a lot more about in the future. I also learned of the UCSD $200K Entrepreneurship Competition from Dany Kitishian, UCSD student and CEO. He was looking to raise funds for the competition’s top award for a startup business plan, which has been increased from $50K to $200K. I also ran into Leo Lee of Pfizer, also the Membership […]

Bio 2008: Post-conference Networking

OK, you collected a TON of business cards at BIO, now what? Get the most out of your BIO 2008 attendance with careful follow up: First, keep the business cards as they were originally collected (mine are in groups according to the days I spoke to the people) and write any additional notes on the back of each card soon, while it’s still fresh in your mind. You might even want to write down when and where you talked to the person, so that you can refer to it during your initial contact with them. Think about your strategy for following up, and organize the business cards accordingly. Are there some contacts you feel that are more pressing than the others? Did you make several different types of contacts? The categorization will be specific to your objectives for the conference. Also consider whether any upcoming business trips would be merited. For example, if you made many contacts in Boston, you can tentatively plan a trip there, and mention it in the email to your new Boston contacts.
